That's a wrap!
Final day of shooting has approached and the footage is all in the bag.
Throughout this process of getting the shots needed for the script, I have learnt alot. Not just about how to shoot in certain situations but I have become more aware of why we are making this documentary.
The 2012 Olympics is approaching and swimming is more than just a life skill, its something to do for fitness and fun and brings people a lot confidence. I feel that our documentary fits the 'why now?' question as it will challenge the statistic of '1 in 5 children can't swim in the UK' and not everyone may have known this before, bringing awareness to the audience.

Emotional Interview
Today we interviewed one of our most sensitive contributors for our 3 minute wonder.
This was especially hard to do because most of the people we have interviewed as practice have been quite upbeat and the questions have been quite basic. When it comes to interviewing someone that has been through a traumatic experience we had to make sure we were very sensitive and careful of how we worded the questions.
Julie had been affected by drowning, when she was 9 her mum and brother drowned and she was rescued. She was very nervous throughout the interview and we made her aware that at any time we could stop if she needed a break. Even though her story was very powerful this was an amazing opportunity for us as a group to interview someone that made it more difficult. It has again tested my abilities, like most things that we have filmed on this project. I look forward to seeing the footage come together in the coming weeks!

Underwater shoot
Today, we did our underwater shoot with our semi professional swimmer. We had an hour to get the footage and as I have had no experience with filming underwater it was a little bit stressful.
At first, I found it difficult trying to swim and film and not drown! But as I got use to the equipment, the experience of shooting in a way that pushed my boundaries was enjoyable and our contributor was really good to work with.
Overall, I'm impressed with the footage we managed to get and have taken some screen shots of some of the best bits!

Work experience credited
Over the summer I was fortunate to gain some work experience with TwoFour for a week. Off the back of that whilst I was there, they offered me a couple of days on shoot. I learnt a lot about how shows are recorded behind the scenes and got to help out in different areas.
Recently the show was broadcasted and it was enjoyable to watch and look for the bits that I was there for. I was excited when I saw my name on the credits, and for once actually took notice of who did what role. This is something that my course has encouraged me to start doing as these are the people you may one day work with.

Underwater housing
In order to get some good visual shots for our opening titles for our 3 minute wonder we want to film some underwater shots.
To do this we needed to get inducted on the underwater housing, me and the producer of our group, James, went to have a look at how to keep the kit dry. The JVC 100 underwater housing is the smallest, apart from the housing for the Canon S90 (compact camera) which wasn't suitable for what we want to do.
Looking forward to trying this out in the pool, hopefully won't feel as heavy as it is in the water, will definitely keep me underwater!
This is an image of one that looks identical to the one we shall be using.

Radio appeal
When it comes to finding contributors, it's not always that easy.
Our group took a different approach and decided to get into contact with BBC Radio Cornwall to help our search. James, our producer, got in contact with the station and we managed to get a phone in slot between 2pm-3pm. Alice, our director spoke on the phone, which was aired live on the station.
Hopefully we will have some interest.
To hear the show again go to http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p00lr4mt and its about 2:41:23 in. Catch it before it can't be heard.

Jib/ Wally Dolly practice
After practising with the Wally Dolly and Jib separate we noticed that the Jibs movement was more static, so decided to test out both together.
We had managed to create smooth movements which will help show the fluid motion of the professional swimmer in the pool.
To re create what we wanted to record in the pool, I got James to pretend he was swimming and it allowed me to keep practising the pace and movement we want for this particular shot.

"1 in 5 children can't swim"...why not?!
When we had to choose to work within a certain group, the one that stuck out the most was Alices pitch about swimming.
'Swimming is a life-skill but one in five adults and one in five children across the UK can't swim at all'
This statistic shocked me and I wanted to be involed in a project that tried to look at why this is the case, as part of the National Curriculum children should be leaving school being able to swim 25m, but this isn't the case. I also realised that it would involve alot of beautiful visuals in the pool I wanted to push my skills as a camera woman and boost my confidence. I realise that at current I still not fully confident with filming but this project gives me the scope to show my creativity and learn a unsual way to shoot.
This project will allow me to specialise in an area that I want to persue as a career and it gives me the responsibilites that I have to consider when being a professional.

Recce under pressure
When it comes to doing a Recce you don't expect perfect camera work but you do want to make sure you can get across what the contributor is like on camera.
I found that when we interviewed Len, who is one of our contributors for our next group project (3 minute wonder), it had to be done quickly due to the lack of time he had availble. We got a general feel of how he was on camera but it felt a bit rushed with us quickly setting up the camera, pointing and recording and then letting him get back to his busy schedule.
It was productive though, even with the lack of time we managed to record of him on camera we were able to talk to parents to start to build up these relationships and develop some kind of trust with them. Due to the difficulties we will face with filming children swimming, these relationships need to become strong. This isn't a set back just something we will overcome as a group!

Prepare to Pitch
Coming up with ideas aren't always easy and then when you do find an idea it's making sure it fits the brief.
For our new unit we have to make a 3 minuter wonder which is normally a profile about a certain person that has an interesting story to tell. My previous ideas that I have mentioned in seminars wouldn't work for this brief as they would need more screen time for the stories to work. Therefore my pitch was a tad rushed and I think because I didn't feel 100% confident with the idea it was hard to sell it to others.
However, there were some really brilliant ideas which made it hard to decide what would work, but we had to make sure it fit the brief. After much discussion we managed to assign ourselves roles within groups, which was tough but gave us a chance to work as a whole course.

GUINNESS!
For our final actuality footage I decided to nominate myself to help El make a chocolate Guinness cake, it was to help her feel less nervous in front of the camera. I was just as nervous as her but we soon relaxed.
However, most of the things that could go wrong whilst making a cake DID! It all adds to getting those 'GEM' moments.
The camera work was really good and as a team we worked well, especially in such a cramped environment with two cameras, a sound lady and me and El trying to make a cake without ruining the shots. I enjoyed making this film the most just because it was such a nice atmosphere and I couldn't help but laugh at our attempt! It definitely helped that we found a good contributor like El. Even though at one point I did think she wouldn't be on camera and I'd have to face it on my own. Just glad it worked well and I'm looking forward to trying the cake....

Royalty free music
Just a little post with a few good links I found when trawling through music libraries:-
This site has some good loops, but its a case of searching randomly and hoping you find something.

Some beautiful music tracks
http://www.taylorhayward.org/recordings.htm
More upbeat tracks and tracks that are full length rather than small loops

enough footage?
When's too much and when's not enough?
So far we have been lucky enough not to undershoot which makes editing easier, especially in a room with no windows! But on occasion I feel we have overshot which means we have been looking through a lot of footage especially as the final edit should only be a minute.
Picking your best shots as well seems to be proving difficult, especially if you have quite a few well shot close ups that you can use as cutaways and then you have to realise you can't use them all, you get a little attached to them.
Well its better than not having enough, just something that will improve with practice.

Interview feedback
After getting feedback about the interview footage, I realise that we need to learn about lighting but this is all about developing and learning as a group and each week we have definitely been improving rather than going backwards.
I really enjoyed filming the interviews last week it gave me the chance to do camera for the whole shoot as in the first couple of weeks we shared out the roles so only got a snippet into each role compared to experiencing it from start to finish. It makes life a whole lot easier when we have more defined roles and overall I feel our group have been very organised at delegating and deciding who's going to do what.
Filming for our actuality brief has been arranged with the ceramics contributor who was really easy to interview, hopefully she'll make an interesting contributor to film for the next task.
Michaela Rose.
last couple of weeks
The first week was a little bit stressful just because it was our first time working as a group and it was all a bit overwhelming thinking of three ideas to shoot. However, we managed to shoot all the footage in a day without any hiccups. Just trying to get your head around Avid isn't easy and that meant that rather than assuming it would take a few hours to do it actually took the whole day.
This week filming the interviews, I have already noticed a change within the group. We have become more organised and shot a day earlier than the week before to allow for more time to edit. Improvements have started to happen but getting the hang of all the paperwork and deadlines will take more practice.
